Who writes Satellite Insights Weekly?

Satellite Insights Weekly is written by Glenn Canales, who has spent forty years in satellite communications, military and commercial, on the buying side and the selling side. He was Senior Director of Enterprise Broadband Services at Viasat; before that he worked at Spacenet (acquired by SageNet in 2013), iDirect Technologies, and PanAmSat and Intelsat; and before that he spent ten years at A.G. Edwards designing and running the firm’s 700-node satellite network. He also served in a United States Air Force communications role.

Glenn also takes on advisory engagements and commissioned research for investors, buyers and operators.

What does Satellite Insights Weekly cover?

1. Low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband

   Constellations, capacity, pricing and the enterprise and government contracts behind them.

2. Geostationary (GEO) and highly elliptical orbit (HEO) operator economics

   Fleet plans, refinancing, consolidation and the satellites operators choose not to replace.

3. Ground segment

   Teleports, modems, ground network as a service, and vendor economics.

4. Direct-to-device (D2D) and satellite Internet of Things (IoT) services

   Spectrum, carrier partnerships and what each service has demonstrated in operation.

5. Sovereign connectivity

   National constellation policy and the procurement decisions that follow from it.

Not every lane appears every week, because an edition follows the week’s news: some weeks cover three lanes and give one story most of the room. Military and defense procurement, aviation connectivity and maritime connectivity appear only as supporting evidence inside a piece about one of the five lanes.

How is an edition built?

Each Deep Dive opens with the same question: what was the most significant event of the week, and why does it matter? The rest of the edition is a set of event cards, each a self-contained read on one development, laid out as an interactive briefing with section navigation.

How are the numbers verified?

1. Every figure is pulled live

   Market capitalizations, market sizes, valuations, share prices and fleet counts come from a live source at the moment of writing. None is taken from memory or carried forward from a prior edition.

2. Two sources minimum

   Specific factual claims require two independent sources. Anything single-sourced says so in the text, with the source named.

3. Designed and demonstrated are labeled separately

   “Designed for 100 gigabits per second” is a specification, and “demonstrated 100 gigabits per second” is a measurement. These pages label each claim as designed or demonstrated, because press releases often present a specification as a measurement.
